Paper plans needed

Ilayaraja would give notes in paper to musicians and would ask them to play.

Today we see lot of meaningless movies being made. The art director is on his own. The screenplay writer is on his own. And the director is asked by the production to make the movie.

Result audiences like me have to sit and watch the bakwaas just because there is an element in the movie which is attractive. Like stars, concept etc.

I wish the producers insist on paper-work from art director and screenplay writer. Maybe photos of locales, photos of indoors, photos of sets. And from the screenplay writer the dialogues. Once the producer is satisfied then only director should be called.

Kurma, Salna and Chettinad

 I was interested to know the difference between Kurma, salna and chettinad vegetables dish.

I think in Chettinad they add ginger paste and garlic paste too. In salna no ginger paste and garlic paste are added. In kurma no ginger paste and garlic paste are added.

Chettinad contains rich flavours of cloves, cinnamon, star anise. Salna contains rich flavours of cloves, cinnamon, star anise. Kurma does not contain costly flavours.

All the three has saunf, coconut and roasted bengal gram.

Am I correct?

Coordination needed in cricket

I was dissatisfied with the team selection yesterday.  In my team Gill was not there and Saha was in. It is too much to play without a wicketkeeper.

Individually Indian players are one of the best. But Australia is a better coordinated team. The coordination between Labuschagne and Head stole the match. And the fearsome Indian fast bowlers and excellent spinners couldn't take wickets. India lost.

IIM Ahmedabad needs to develop exercises to develop coordination when Individual ego might exist. I suggest blindfold exercises, multi-player tic tac toe, dark room selection and all.

The most original British mathematician

 If you think the most original British mathematician was Brook Taylor or Colin Maclaurin.  Think again.

The most original British mathematician was John Wallis. 

Taylor series has inspiration from John Wallis hypergeometric functions.  

So Taylor borrowed from Wallis.  Maclaurin from Taylor.  And Newton from Maclaurin. 

My point of Newton borrowing zero concept from Maclaurin is correct because Colin Maclaurin was a child prodigy and Newton was a weak child. However Newton received inspiration when apple fell on his head is correct and he is great in gravity. 

I am of John Wallis. 

It was Newton who made calculus prior to Maclaurin making his Maclaurin series.  So Newton was possibly an inspiration for Maclaurin and not Maclaurin an inspiration for Newton.  As I wrote in earlier paragraphs. 

12th Fail movie

I watched the movie 12th Fail at a cinema hall in Ranchi yesterday. 

The movie is good. Realistically shot and made, entertaining and a very much Indian subject. 

It will not be proper to say more than this. There are a lot of things I kept waiting for throughout the movie. Will the hero clear his exams? Will he get the girl? Will there be a happy ending ? All these questions kept cropping up in my mind while I watched the movie shot at a pace I loved.

If you like rural Indian life and like watching an aspiring Indian youth working out for a better life; you can watch the movie.

I have altered my plans of comic making. I won't be doing color comics. But black and white.  This will reduce the cost and also the margin can be more.

So black and white it will be for my comics.

I am practicing daily and am not sure whether I can improve considerably.  But what I am hoping for is confident lines. Accuracy. Correctness. 

Human figure 80 percent satisfaction.  Animals 60 percent satisfaction.  Objects 70 percent satisfaction. Outdoors 50 percent satisfaction.  Indoors 55 percent satisfaction. 

I shall combine inking too in my daily practice.  

Combining human, animals, objects and outdoor/indoor all together in one frame has to wait. When I get 80 percent satisfaction in individual drawings of each of the above.

How to use Deming's PDCA in improving quality of drawings quickly?

Deming was a master philosopher and quality guru. He preached the PDCA cycle.

I feel the Check and Act should be immediate.  This means drawing similar drawing in different perspectives.  So that the error that you did in one drawing is quickly taken care of in the next drawing.  Also I like doing this and I find them challenging. 

What about beginners?

Beginners can do sphere, cone, cylinder and cube practices in different perspectives.  All the objects of the world are made of a combination of sphere, cone, cylinders and cube.

You can also experiment by keeping the sphere, cone, cylinder and cube in varying sizes, positions and practice drawing. 

Then you can begin shading the sphere, cone, cylinder and cube.

Then draw shadows.

Then improve 3d effect in 2d paper.

This I believe will improve your drawings quickly. 

My business model

I intend to get into comic industry.  My father always encouraged us to become an entrepreneur.  He worked in a private company all his life. I have imbibed his dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and I shall make efforts to fulfill them.

I shall be practicing perspective of man, woman , kids and also animals like cow, horse, camel, dog, cat, elephant, deer, lion, tiger. Objects like table, chair, sofa, bed, music system, computer, utensils shall be practised.

I shall practice inking.  I have ordered waterproof black ink for that. And also Artline Drawing System gel pens which is black. Waterproof ink is necessary because I shall be later coloring with Staedtler Luna watercolor pencils and be using a wet brush. 

I shall be coloring with Staedtler Luna watercolor pencils. I shall be using only 12 colors. The standard colors. This is because I want my comics be able to be printed in printing press of smaller cities too.

I have ordered French curves from Amazon for drawing speech and thought balloons in communication of characters. 

I plan to teach measuring behavior fundamentals.  This is of pi. Fairness in society.  And unfairness in society. And what is the correct behavior.

Nine points to becoming a comic artist

I am a big follower of PDCA. I shall not be just Doing practices in above nine points; but shall be Checking them; and Acting for exactness. I believe in golden ratio inside me and I hope to find the right remedy for correction and improvement. 

Meanwhile I googled for comic publishers in India. And there are many in Delhi.  Chak de phatte !! Balle balle !! (Punjabi euphoria). If I am lucky and good enough I shall knock the doors of these publishers.  And get an assignment.

I was getting bored this weekend.  Usually my thoughts are occupied with SAIL,  equations and drawing art. I wanted a change and went to the cinema hall and watched Nun II.

I liked the movie . I couldn't grasp what exactly is so evil that a Nun follows the evil. But learnt that love of one's mother and her devotion to God can protect from evil ways.

I shall from now onwards do sandhyavandhanam at least once. And do namaskarams to God in general.

If I were to make curriculum

Allow me to spread my wings on education.  Curriculum. 

If given a chance to change Curriculum I shall do the following. 

Do away with Maclaurin series in 12th.

Include consecutive numbers theory in 11th and teach infinity and binomials with consecutive numbers in 12th.

Teach resemblance, measurement of Asaro head, shadow drawing of lighted statues in art Curriculum. 

Include my rhythm and my note identification techniques in music.

Tongue philosophy is necessary as a SUPW part. SUPW is a DTEA school term. Socially useful public work.

The last few months

The last few months were different. Since September 2022 to April 2023. I was occupied with one particular thought most of the time.  The thought was of Ponniyin Selvan.  Yes, I am serious. 

I never heard of the book before September 2022. Of course I knew of Raja raja chola because he was a great king. But about the book, no. 

I slowly got into the groove of Ponniyin Selvan.  Why write Ponniyin Selvan? What is the story? Who are the main characters? Why were the cholas so great? etc. 

Then I saw the movie 'Ponniyin Selvan 1'. Then I saw 3 more times in OTT.  Then I understood some of the movie making techniques.  Then followed YouTube videos. It kept me rolling for 7 to 8 months.

Now I have seen 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' also.

And the great time like that of Olympics or Football World cup is over.

Now what?

I am planning to read the following books in my kindle reader.  I am making notes and have bought a notebook for it.

I also have plans to improve quality of my artwork in funny cartoons and portraits.

My recent purchases

I am in Delhi currently.  I am more comfortable shopping in Delhi shops. I got the following from a stationery shop yesterday. 

Staedtler Mars Lumograph Drawing pencils.  Two normal Luxor black sketch pens. One Uniball 1mm black gel pen.

The Staedtler Mars Lumograph Drawing pencils contains 2 pencils each of 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B pencils.  And 1 pencil each of 2H, H, B and HB pencils. They will help me in monochrome portraits.  I will be using sharpeners with these pencils.  I made a mistake of using pencil sharpening knife with portraits drawing pencils earlier. Be it color or be it monochrome.  It is better to use sharpeners with portraits drawing pencils. Not pencils sharpening knife. For Staedtler Luna watercolor pencils pencils sharpening knife is okay as you need to apply and not make strokes.  Basically the question is whether you want the pencils sharp or blunt. Pencil sharpening knife is good for blunt pencils.

The black Luxor sketch pens will be handy in funny caricature of VIPs.

The Uniball 1mm gel pen will be great in funny cartoons drawing. 

Ponniyin Selvan based videos

I am watching a lot many videos in YouTube on Ponniyin Selvan movies review and decoding videos. 

The knowledge gained from these videos are tremendous. A lot of efforts have gone into the making of Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2. Tremendous brains have coordinated among themselves to give the movies Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2.

I shall be seeing the hindi dubbed Ponniyin Selvan 2 on 29th evening.  I was keen on music actually and was a little disappointed that songs are less and hymns are more. 

I am eagerly waiting for the release of the movie.

Trailer of Ponniyin Selvan 2

The trailer of Ponniyin Selvan 2 was good.  It didn't reveal the crux of the story.  But revealed a little what interpretation the movie is likely to take.

I couldn't follow the book and relied on YouTube audio books.  Anyways I was reading the English translation of the book. 

It seemed unfair for Oomai Rani to be considered in such a fashion in the story book. I think it could be that Kalki was referring to some aspect of Rajaji life. Not sure what.  I think it is the fact that Shiva has children in hindu stories.

Why Rajaji? I can't understand how Gandhiji could be so hard.  Rationality was the need of the time and irrational education was probably the issue. If you recollect from history Congress guys were sycophants and were interested in higher education abroad and in India.  They avoided Muslim League and this was too costly for India. 

I can't understand the reason why the movie is being released in north India.  Seems to be a South Indian market for the story. And music is amazing.  Two notes subject. What thiruvarur guys made this music scale or something.  

I hope they write it is interpretation of the story or something.

I felt sad

I felt sad when 'Ponniyin Selvan-1' failed to get an award at the Asian Film Awards 2023. My anger was compounded because while 'RRR' won laurels, my favorite of the two failed to get an award. I thought music or costume will get an award. But it did not.

Do not get disheartened 'Ponniyin Selvan' fans.  I have seen 'Ponniyin Selvan-1' four times. I managed to see 'RRR' once and by forwarding I completed 'Kantara'. I am talking of south Indian movies. These are due to the times we are in. It is difficult to see movies when one is not expected to like.

I think Mani Ratnam has planned superbly. Because when I saw for the fourth time, I realized that Karuthiruman (a crucial character) is already shown in Ponniyin Selvan-1. The planning, script are brilliant and imaginative. How fantastically they have managed two parts at a single go. And that too during Corona peak. 

I am confident of A R Rahman and the songs of 'Ponniyin Selvan-2' will be great. I am sure of it. This is what I am expecting the most from 'Ponniyin Selvan -2'.

Is Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy a great book ?

When I think of written thoughts I like Anton Chekov the most. Short stories of Tagore are great. They are great authors. 

But what about Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy?

Kalki wrote the story in 1950s in a magazine Kalki as a weekly story continued for 5 years.  It was quite popular among general public.  

I feel the focus of Kalki is an amazing feat. He does not write about achievement of Raja raja chola or others. But showcases a small period of Chola empire.  

Mani Ratnam says that Ponniyin Selvan story is meant to be interpreted as suited to its reader. Part 4 and Part 5 of Ponniyin Selvan are very confusing to me. It might have been interesting in 1950s as a weekly.  But in novel form it is difficult to have a clear image in mind from the writing. I flipped through pages in Kindle and later listened to audio version of Part 4 and Part 5.

Kalki had a great responsibility.  He had to tell the history.  He had to show a great empire in a way that people are proud of.  At the same time he did not want to belittle the other major kingdoms. 

So all in all Ponniyin Selvan is an interesting story.  It remains to be seen how Mani Ratnam and his team present the rest of the story as a cinema.  I am interested to see Ponniyin Selvan 2. What about you?
